Dear UJHS Families:

Welcome to first quarter at UJHS! We are so excited that school is back in session with 86% of our students attending in-person and 14% utilizing the all-remote option for the semester.

Our faculty and staff have done an amazing job of getting the school year off to a great start. Please remember that weekly updates and other resources can be found on your student’s grade level team website at www.ujhs.com. UJHS teachers have found extraordinary ways to deliver instruction to our students. Please check out your student’s Google Classrooms. Instructions for accessing Google Classroom are posted on grade level team websites or ask your student for help.

The Illinois State Board of Education announced this week that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is extending waivers for Summer Meals programs through the end of this calendar year. This means that Unit Seven Schools will provide free breakfast and lunch for all students in the district.

  • Please complete this Google Form if you plan to participate. The form will be open until 10:00 am on September 8.
  • The program applies to students who attend both in-person and all-remote.
  • Pick up for students who are all-remote will continue to be Mondays and Wednesdays at UHS as explained in the beginning of the year letter.
  • The program starts September 14 and will continue through December 23, 2020.
  • Please complete a separate from for each of your students who attend UJHS.
  • PLEASE COMPLETE ONLY IF YOU PLAN TO PARTICIPATE. This will give us count for ordering.

New September COVID Symptom Certify cards were sent home today with your student. Please remember that students need these yellow cards to get on buses and to enter the building in the mornings.  We appreciate the cooperation we have received from families as we comply with state guidelines.

Thank you for all your support with maintaining expectations for your student during afternoon remote instruction. I am pleased to share that attendance data for afternoon remote instruction on September 1 indicates that on that day, 99.9% of UJHS students were in compliance.  I think this speaks volumes regarding the educational commitment of teachers, students and families at UJHS. Keep up the good work!

September 25 is an 11:30 am early release day. Lunch will not be served. Although this is an early release day, it will be a NWEA MAP assessment day for UJHS in-person students. Students will be assessed in both math and English/language arts. Please plan to send your student to school on this day as make up assessment becomes very challenging in this new environment. MAP data is used in many ways by UJHS to help us understand how to best serve our students.

Finally, I want to thank you for all of your support as we navigate a new way of participating in school. The kind emails, notes, and words of encouragement have been greatly appreciated by faculty, staff and administration. We have been working very hard to make this a successful start to the school year. Thank you for recognizing our efforts!

Have nice weekend,

Laura Fitzgerald
